What Chemicals Can Cause a Yeast Infection?

Yeast Infection can be annoying and it can also be painful to many women around the world. There are many causes of yeast infection. You may want to know if chemicals are one of the causes of yeast infection. If so, what are they? How they can trigger them. This article will talk about the relationship between chemical and yeast infection.

Some chemicals including inks, dyes, and perfumes can upset the balance in the vagina. It can trigger allergy and finally turns it to yeast infections. The commercial douches that many women like to use are considered harmful to the vaginal environment and can cause them. The douches are claimed to kill odor-causing bacteria in the vagina. The bacteria unfortunately are the ones that control the yeast population in the vagina. Soaps can also be disruptive to vaginal environment and can destroy the mucous membranes in the vagina. To avoid having yeast infection, you have to avoid using soaps on your crotch.

Other chemicals that can cause allergy to the vagina are the chemicals in the perfumed and colored toilet paper. They can also cause yeast infection. If you are allergic to colored one, you will need to change to un-dyed toilet paper.

Some laundry detergent can cause allergy that lead to yeast infection. Select the right detergent to wash your underwear. Feminine deodorant sprays can similarly trigger the infection of yeast.

The chemical which cover many condoms is nonoxinol-9. It is a spermicidal which may also kill HIV virus. The chemical can also disturb vaginal environment and trigger yeast infection. Avoid using condom that has spermicidal lubricant. Some people are allergic to latex, then they will have to find other ways of safer sex if they do not want to get into a trap.

Many chemicals can trigger yeast infection. This article describes the related chemicals and suggests how you can avoid them.

Are Medications for the Treatment of Enlarged Prostate (Benign ...

Alpha adrenergic receptor blocker medications, including doxazosin (Cardura), prazosin (Minipress), alfuzosin (Uroxatral), and terazosin (Hytrin), cause a relaxation of prostate smooth muscle and increase urine flow (Lepor et al 1996; McConnell et al 2003). The FDA has approved all of these medications for the treatment of BPH, with the exception of Minipress. Minipress is a medication that has been on the market for the treatment of hypertension for many years; your doctor has the right to prescribe it for you "off label" for the treatment of BPH if he or she thinks it is indicated. There are no current plans to obtain an indication for Minipress for the treatment of BPH, since it has been off patent for many years. All of the alpha adrenergic receptor blocker medications have similar side effects including dizziness, postural hypotension, and fatigue. The potential benefit from relief of BPH symptoms is usually worth the side effects of these medications. However, Uroxatral should not be used in patients with liver problems and causes cardiac effects (lengthening of the Q-T interval).

Tamsulosin (Flomax) is a selective blocker of the ±-1A adrenergic receptor that has fewer side effects than the other alpha-blockers because it is more selective to the ±-1A adrenergic receptor than the other drugs reviewed above. The other alpha blockers block adrenergic receptors in both the heart and the brain as well as in the prostate. For this reason they can block the smooth muscles in the blood vessels in these areas and cause the blood vessels to dilate. This changes blood flow in the brain, with associated dizziness, fatigue, or the possibility of passing out if you stand up too quickly (postural hypotension). Since Flomax is more specific to the adrenergic receptors in the prostate, it has fewer of these side effects.

5±-reductase inhibitors include drugs like finasteride (Proscar). One of the most important factors contributing to BPH is the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT normally stimulates prostate tissue in adolescent males, which leads to the ability to produce semen and therefore become fertile. In later age, however, DHT can stimulate prostate tissue in a counter-productive way. Proscar inhibits the enzyme responsible for the conversion of testosterone to DHT, 5±-reductase, thereby reducing DHT levels as much as 80%. This is associated with a decrease in prostate volume of 20%, since this hormone stimulates prostate tissue growth. Side effects include decreased libido, impotence and ejaculatory disorder. Dutasteride (Duagen) blocks both types 1 and 2 5±-reductase and has a similar side effect profile as finasteride.

In the PROscar Safety Plus Efficacy Canadian Two Year Study (PROSPECT), 613 men with moderate BPH symptoms were started on a two year treatment course with Proscar or placebo (Nickel et al 1996). Finasteride resulted in a statistically significant reduction in symptom scores compared to placebo, with a baseline score of 15.8 the difference between finasteride and placebo was only 0.4, not a very big difference. There was about a 10% increase in urinary flow rates. Over twice as many (15.8%) of finasteride patients developed impotence as patients on placebo (6.3%). In a study comparing finasteride to the alpha blocker terazosin and placebo, 1229 were randomized to blinded treatment for one year. Change in symptom scores were 2.6 for placebo, 3.2 for finasteride, 6.1 for terazosin, and 6.2 for terazosin and finasteride.(Lepor et al 1996) Similar improvements were seen with urine flow, with greater increases in urine flow for terazosin. Finasteride was no better than placebo, while terazosin was statistically significantly better than both finasteride and placebo. Impotence was higher with finasteride (9%) than placebo (5%) or terazosin (6%). Another study looking at the long term effects of these drugs studied 3047 patients for five years on placebo, doxazosin (alpha blocker), finasteride, or combination therapy. The outcome was a four point increase in BPH symptom score, urinary retention or incontinence. Doxazosin reduced progression by 39% and finasteride by 34% compared to placebo (both statistically significant) (McConnell et al 2003). Combination therapy was even better (66% reduction) and was associated with a reduction in the need for surgery, as was finasteride alone.

Based on these findings I recommend the use of the alpha blockers initially (doxazosin (Cardura), prazosin (Minipress), alfuzosin (Uroxatral), and terazosin (Hytrin) and Flomax) with addition of Proscar or Duagen depending on symptom response and side effects. Talk it over with your doctor.

The Tale of TB

Since time immemorial, tuberculosis has been one of humanity's greatest nemesis. The earliest of human civilizations have suffered tremendous wrecks from this dreadful and fatal disease. Mummies from Egypt beginning 2400 BCE are proofs of the long-enduring curse of tuberculosis. Even the ancient Greece have their share of tuberculosis plague. It is from Greek literature that the word phthisis, which means consumption, was first discovered. It was prevalent that Hippocrates called it as the most fatal disease of their time.

The bacteria by the name of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the identified cause of tuberculosis. More popularly known as TB, tuberculosis is misconceived by many as a disease exclusive to the lungs. While it mainly affects the lungs, some body parts, or almost every body part actually, can be affected by TB. The central nervous system, lymphatic system, circulatory system, genitourinary system, bones, and joints are just some other body parts that can be harmed by TB.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an aerobis bacterium that grows slowly that it takes 16 to 20 hours to divide. When this bacteria is inhaled, it settles around the lung area and its eventual multiplication leads to pneumonia. Lymph nodes connected to the lungs can also be affected by the infection. These lymph nodes become enlarged and its normal healthy processes gets badly affected. The bacteria that causes TB is highly probable to spread around the nearby areas and can reach other body parts as well. As a natural response to any bacteria, the human body's immune system would act by producing scar tissues (fibrosis) to fence the bacteria in the hope of containing its spread. The main goal of our body's immune system's response is to isolate the bacteria from the other tissues and organs of our body. If a person's immune system succeeds in doing so, the disease may be made inactive. People whose immune system successfully mitigates the spread of the bacteria generally show no signs and symptoms of the infection. However, constant production of fibrosis can lead to yet another bad effect. When massive deposits of calcium go to the scar tissues, calcification, the lymph nodes, and the scar tissues are likely to harden like stone.

The success of our body's immune system on quelling or at least, containing the harmful effects of the bacteria lies on the assumption that it remains well and healthy. But if our body's immune system is deteriorated by other factors or infections, TB bacteria is very well able of escaping the fences of the scar tissues and proceed with its natural way of living-- replication and invasion of other body parts. When this happens, pneumonia is very likely to happen again and again. Worse and highly probable, the bacteria may invade the kidneys, bone, spinal cord, and brain lining.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is characterized by its staining capabilities. Even if the bacteria is treated, it can leave some strains especially if it had been treated with an acidic solution.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis has three other myobacteria-- M.microti, M.bovis, and M.africanum-- that can cause tuberculosis. There are also other myobacteria (nontuberculous myobacteria) that can cause TB-like pulmonary diseases, skin disease, and lymphadenitis.

The primary mode of transmission is the inhalation of infected air exhaled by a TB carrier. The bacteria is transported outside the lungs and mix with the air everytime a TB-infected person sneezes, spits, coughs, or even shouts. People at a close distance can then easily get easily get the bacteria and get infected.

When the TB infection is active, one that has not been contained by scar tissues, a number of symptoms can easily manifest. Patients with an active TB infection show symptoms of poor general health condition, noticeable weight loss, fever, and night sweats. If the lungs get so infected, chest pain, coughing up of sputum and/or blood, and poor breathing generally occur.

A combination of Myambutol, Rifadin, pyrazinamide, together with isoniazid is the most common treatment for TB infections that are active and progressive. In cases of patients not being able to comply with oral medications, injection of Streptomycin is given. The duration and intensity of medication depends on how grave or serious the case already is. Patients who had an early detection of the infection are more likely to be cured immediately than those at late detection.

Did You Know That High Blood Pressure Can Be Treated Without the ...

Can High Blood Pressure Be Treated Without The Need For Drugs?

Orthodox medical Doctors make 4 mistakes when it comes to treating patients with high blood pressure. For that matter, whether it's a cardiovascular problem like high blood pressure or any disease related illness, these 4 mistakes always persist.

The 4 Mistakes That Orthodox Medical Doctors Make

1. The symptoms are the cause of illness.

No! Symptoms are only the manifestations of the root cause: Symptoms are knock on effects or warning signs...

2. They pay no real attention to diet and exercise.

3. They practically ignore the mind/spirit connection and its influences on health.

4. Very little or no consideration is given to water and its pharmacological role.

How does the above fit into the orthodox medical approach when it comes to treating high blood pressure? What are the alternative naturopathic solutions and how well do they work?

These are very important questions, since the Journal of the American Medical Association (Oct. 2002; 288: 1882-1888) reported that middle-aged or older people in the USA have a 90% chance of developing high blood pressure.

First, lets consider how it could be for someone suffering from high blood pressure. He/she may be overweight or feeling worn out and sluggish, dehydrated, or not breathing well... So the doctor prescribes the pills: Lotensin, Mevacor, Cardizem, Procardia...etc, any of these to normalize the blood pressure. As time goes by, months then years, side effects manifest as a consequence of the pills. -How?

Well, without going into a long-winded harangue it basically goes like this:

Remember the above 4 mistakes. Because pills only treat the symptoms, the underlying root-cause is ignored and yes, it still persists. Due to a history of bad diet or a lack of exercise or stress, the inner walls of the patient's arteries are lined with plaque. This results in a narrowing of the arteries. What does orthodox medicine do? Instead of getting to the root-cause by permanently unblocking the arteries, the blood pressure lowering drugs reduce the activity of the heart so that the blood pressure gage reads normal.

-What are the consequences of this quick fix? Remember, the heart is now less active, and because the walls of the arteries are narrow and the blood pressure is normalized, like any tube supplying liquid with a smaller lumen (the space inside), the outflow is restricted. This means that the blood supply from the heart to the target organs in the body is restricted. Because the oxygen demands from the target organs are not met due to this lack of blood supply, a whole range of illnesses can result. On the long-term this could include: a weaker heart, degeneration of other organ tissue and lung congestion, which ultimately could result in death.

Other reported side effects due to the above blood pressure lowering drugs include headaches, dizzy spells, queasiness, cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), low blood pressure, sexual dysfunction, mood swings, depression, memory loss and changes in personality...

Another orthodox medical approach is angioplasty, where an operation is performed to unblock the arteries and allow blood to flow more freely again. However, because it is only a quick fix, treating the symptom, in many cases re-occlusion (narrowing of the arteries through plaque returning) occurs.

Surgeons Oh Those Heralded Heroes!

I'm sure there was a time in your life when you were told stories about surgeons and how great they were with their life-saving operations... Here's the truth about heart bypass surgery. The overall survival rate for patients post-operation is no different than those who chose to do nothing at all! (New England Journal of Medicine May 22, 1997 and American of Journal Cardiology June 1998). Notice I took the trouble to reference 2 studies. There are many others that document the same findings. Other studies show that there is a 13% chance that these patients will die on the operating table (Dr Tim O'Shea 2007).

Well, what do you expect? If you only treat the symptoms with temporary house-cleaning methods the problem, plaque growth on the inner walls of the arteries, will return. And as for those with coronary bypass surgery, an unblocking of the arteries that supply the heart with blood, what about all the other arteries in their body? Why should they be any different? Guess what condition these arteries will be in?

What Are The Alternatives?

The first thing to realize is that in order for a patient to be cured, the root-cause of the high blood pressure needs to be addressed. The root-cause can be addressed effectively by lowering high blood pressure through natural approaches. -This indeed is in line with effectively correcting the above 4 mistakes that doctors make.

Find out about these natural solutions that get to the root-cause and very effectively lower high blood pressure in my follow up article 'Lowering High Blood Pressure The Natural Way.' -If you suffer from high blood pressure this information might just save your life!

Rising Demand For Herbal and Ayurveda Products

India is the known as the birthplace of Ayurveda as the great Himalayan mountain range, which forms its northern frontier, is also the source of many herbs that are used in Ayurvedic products. In today's globalization era more and more Indians are choosing to work outside India leading to a rise in the diaspora population. The swelling population of Indians across the globe has led to the popularity of Ayurveda, which in turn has led to a rise in the demand for Herbal Products. Herbal Products, which have been made by following the principles of Ayurveda, which is a five thousand year old system of medicine.

Preparations made from Plant extracts are sought after by patients all across the globe as they have minimal side effects. However, it would be an exaggeration that ayurvedic products have no side effects. Since Ayurvedic preparations are made from plant extracts they help in healing a complication in the natural way. Popular herbs, which are used in the preparation of medicinal formulations, include Amalaki, Arjuna, Ashvagandha, Brahmi, Karela, Lasuna, Neem, Shuddha Guggulu, Shallaki, Tagara, Triphala, Tulasi etc.

In view of the rising popularity of Ayurveda, major pharmaceutical companies who until now were involved in the manufacture of allopathic drugs have forayed into this market segment. The entry of organized players has led to increased investments in Drug manufacturing, R&D and Logistics. Ayurvedic drugs are now being produced in accordance with the established principles laid down by the regulatory authorities. So patients can be assured of the safety of a drug purchased from any of these companies. Distribution and marketing has improved as companies have spotted a huge opportunity in the overseas market. Patients located in any corner of the globe can order herbal products from the online storefront set up by these companies.

Popular Herbal formulations which have acquired popularity in foreign markets include Serpina,Liv.52,Bonnisan,Reosto,Menosan,PureHands, Himplasia. Apart from medicinal formulations other preparations made from herbal extracts like Acne-n-Pimple Cream, Anti-dandruff Hair Oil, Anti-dandruff Shampoo, Anti-wrinkle Cream, Baby Cream, Baby Lotion, Baby Powder, Diaper Rash Cream, Hair Loss Cream, Muscle & Joint Rub, Nourishing Baby Oil, Sunscreen Lotion.

These days, herbal products are not only used for the treatment of humans but also for animals. Ayurvedic drugs and therapies are also being prepared to alleviate the sufferings of animals and improve their heath. Improved health of livestock leads to animal and dairy products, which are safe for human consumption.

The Secret You Don't Know About Free Medicine from Pharmaceutical ...

Medical insurance costs are skyrocketing and many places of employment no longer supply medical insurance without a major dip into your pocketbook. The impact of under-insured or uninsured Americans and senior citizens are taking a toll on households across U.S.

I have been without insurance. At one time I had to purchase medicine with a price tag of over $1,900 a month. Because of that time, I was inspired to find out what I could do to help defray the cost of the medicine.

What I discovered is one of the best kept secrets in the medical industry. The secret is that pharmaceutical companies and major pharmaceutical company sponsors provide free prescription medicines to individuals and families that qualify.

For those individuals and families who can’t afford the cost of or the co-payment their prescription medications require, help has been around for years. The first step is to find out who manufactures the prescriptions you are taking.

Once you know the manufacturer, go to their website and download their application or apply online for their program. Some of the pharmaceutical websites and pharmaceutical company sponsors have websites that have the program information easily available.

Other websites you will have to search to find the program. Once you either fill out their application online or downloaded the application, you will in most cases need to get a signed consent form from your doctor to fax or send to the company. Every program has different rules and procedures.

Please take advantage of this opportunity to help you, your family and friend defray a bit of the medical costs from your budget.

Is This Hypertension High Blood Pressure Medication Right for You?

Adalat (whose generic name is nifedipine) is a medication that is used primarily to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (chest pain). Nifedipine is the active ingredient in the brand name drugs Procardia and Nifedical.

Adalat is a calcium channel blocker and works by relaxing blood vessels. By relaxing blood vessels the arteries in your heart relax allowing more blood flow thereby reducing your blood pressure.

Adalat should only be taken if a doctor has prescribed it for you. It is important that Adalat be taken on an empty stomach and should be taken whole, never crushed or chewed. You should also avoid eating grapefruit or products containing grapefruit unless approved by your doctor. If Adalat is prescribed for you, you should try to take it at the same time every day. It is very important not to stop taking Adalat even if you feel better unless advised to do so by your doctor. Remember, there are usually no warning signs of hypertension (high blood pressure) and even if you feel well you could still be in danger of heart attack, stroke, and blindness. Generally if your physician decides to stop Adalat treatment he or she will gradually reduce your dosage. Do not stop taking Adalat suddenly as your condition may become worse.

Dizziness, headaches, and swelling of the limbs may occur with Adalat. Generally these are not serious but you should tell your doctor about any side effects that occur while you are taking Adalat. Your blood pressure should be checked routinely while on Adalat. If your blood pressure readings seem to escalate inform your doctor right away.

Adalat has a proven track record for treating hypertension and angina but only you and your doctor can determine if it is right for you. This article does not take the place of professional medical advice and should never be taken except under the direction of your physician.

Top 4 Diabetes Medications

These days, a variety of medicines are available to treat diabetes. When individuals find themselves diagnosed with Type II diabetes, they are generally given one or more of these medications, rather than insulin. Often, multiple drugs are used, rather than just one. The purpose of the medicines is to enable the body to make more insulin on its own, thereby allowing your body to process the blood sugar it needs to eliminate without putting your blood sugar levels out of balance.

Sulfonylureas are one of the most well respected drugs used to treat diabetes. There are several different types of this medication on the market, the most popular being Glucotrol. These drugs work by increasing the amount of insulin released from the pancreas. These medicines work well in lowering blood sugar levels but also run the risk of a person developing hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemia occurs when your blood sugar level is too low. Because of this potentially dangerous side effect, sulfonylureas are often given with other medicines, most notably Glucophage, or more commonly known as Metformin. This drug works well with Glucotrol as it reduces the amount of blood sugar in the liver while the Glucotrol increases the amount of insulin in the pancreas. Both medications must be taken prior to meals. Most people who are first diagnosed with Type II diabetes are given this combination of medicines which, when taken as directed, are effective at maintaining a healthy blood sugar level.

Another drug that is showing promise in working well with Metformin is Prandin. Prandin also lowers blood sugar levels but at a slower rate than Metformin and has shown good results in studies. Like Glucotrol, Prandin increases the amount of insulin in the body and can also cause hypoglycemia. It is very important for a patient with diabetes to work with their doctor to get the right dosage of each medication and never double a dosage or cut one in half. Prandin cannot be used in women who are pregnant or nursing children.

Many of those with Type II diabetes will find that their doctors prescribe the new medication Starlix to treat their disease. Although Starlix works in a way that's similar to Prandin, people take the same dosage over time, rather than needing to adjust the doses as they would with Prandin. This fact, plus the fact that Starlix does not put the kidneys at risk, make it an extremely popular and promising new option on the diabetes medication market.

While most medicines that treat diabetics increase insulin developed in the pancreas and decrease the sugar in the liver, newer drugs are being marketed that decrease the absorption of carbohydrates in the intestines. Precose did remarkably well in trial studies in breaking down the carbohydrates in the system, making it easier to eliminate. However, this medication has not done as well as the sulfonlureas, which are considered the best possible medicines that treat the disease at this time. However, for those who are allergic to sulfur, Precose is a good option.

A diagnosis of Type II diabetes may be frightening for an individual, but there are many different drugs available that can keep this disease at bay. It is very important, however, for a patient to be totally compliant in order for these medicines to work effectively. It may take increased dosages, lowered dosages or different combinations of medications in order to get the right balance to help you maintain a healthy blood sugar level. This is why it is so important for an individual to carefully monitor their levels throughout the day and keep a record for the physician.

You and your doctor, working together, can normalize your blood sugar levels and control your condition. To play your role in this teamwork, you must monitor your sugar and report the results, in addition to any symptoms you experience, to your doctor regularly. Doing this puts you, rather than your diabetes, in the driver's seat of your body and your life.

Natural Mood Booster - How To Improve Your Mental Wellbeing Naturally

Scientific studies have shown that there is a strong link between the brain's chemicals - such as dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine and melatonin - and diet, exercise, sleep, sunlight and stress.

In this article I will discuss how our environment can affect these chemicals and thus our mood and what actions we can take in order to limit these actions and boost our inner wellbeing.

Before I get into telling you what methods you can use in boosting your mood I'll give a definition of the four main 'mood chemicals'.

Dopamine is a hormone and neurotransmitter which is in the make-up of a wide range of animals. Within the brain it has a number of functions in behaviour, motor activity, motivation, sleep, stress, mood, learning, attention and milk production.

In addition to this dopamine is associated with the 'pleasure system' of our brain which provides feeling of enjoyment, motivation and proactivity. Therefore suppression of this chemical will make feel demotivated, dissatisfied and generally unhappy.

As with dopamine, serotonin is a neurotransmitter and is linked to aggression, anger, body temperature, mood, sleep, sexuality, appetite and even vomiting. With this in mind let's look at mood. Mood and our serotonin levels affect emotion, behaviour and thought; therefore low levels of this bodily chemical are quite possibly the underlying cause of depression and aggressive actions.

Norepinephrine is a stress hormone and affects the sections of the brain which control attention and responsive actions. Along with the bodily chemical epinephrine it underlies the action of fight-or-flight A lack of this chemical will lead to poor concentration, restlessness and irritability.

Melatonin is a chemical which is affected by light and sleep patterns. Research has suggested that a lack of melatonin can lead to headaches and could be the underlying cause of the condition Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Now that we've gained a little understanding on the functions of these important mood chemicals I can know give you a little insight into the techniques which you can follow to increase the production of these chemicals naturally.

Exercise - I know that it's a bit of a clichй that taking regular exercise will improve your mood and increase energy levels, but it's one which works. If you are feeling blue, dust down those trainers/sneakers and hit that treadmill or undertake any other form of exercise you feel comfortable performing, and do a 20-30 routine.

A good old fashioned workout will increase your levels of dopamine and serotonin which in turn will improve your mood and give you more energy. How will it give you more energy? Well, not only will your fitness levels increase but the rise in serotonin and dopamine will make you less sluggish, give you more motivation and more importantly make you less restless and irritable, which means you'll sleep a lot better.

N.B. Before you undertake any new exercise regime you should seek advice from your doctor.

If you stay indoors quite a lot and don't get out in the fresh air and sun as much as you perhaps should, then your levels of melatonin may well decrease which in turn affects your sleep patterns, making you feel drowsy, irritable and generally crabby and as we discussed earlier can lead to seasonal depression.

Laughter - This one might seem a bit silly especially if you're suffering from depression and don't feel like having much fun. The theory behind this natural mood booster is that laughing on a regular basis will flood the body with tension killing hormones, which make us relaxed and less susceptible to the stresses that life can throw at us. Therefore the next time you're feeling low put on a funny movie or even make silly faces in the mirror, anything which will make you laugh really.

Oily Fish - The next natural mood booster is eating oily fish such as salmon, herring, tuna and sardines. These contain Omega 3 fatty acids which help reduce depressive symptoms. Wild pacific salmon, mid-Atlantic blue crab, croaker, haddock, farmed catfish, shrimp, summer flounder are all are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and are low in mercury which is good news for pregnant women who are may be concerned about the effects of consuming high levels of this mineral on their unborn child.

If you don't like fish perhaps talk to your doctor about the possibility of taking some sort of fish oil supplement

Crying - Reports show that having a good old cry once in while may be a natural mood booster. The tears which are produced from the results of a good blub contain chemicals which are built up during periods of tension; therefore crying washes these out of your system, which in turn lowers stress levels.

Sunlight - Not only is sunshine good for us physically - in terms of providing us with essential vitamin D - it benefits us mentally too. It does this by boosting our feel good chemicals such as melatonin and dopamine. A few rays a day will help ward of seasonal affective disorder too. So if you ever wondered why people always seem that little bit more cheerful when the sun is shining, now you know.

Chocolate - Chocolate is a good natural mood booster because it contains small amounts of chemicals which improve our mental wellbeing such as phenylethylamine, anandamide and tryptophan. However as these chemicals are minuscule it is believed that they make is feel good by maintaining the levels of these chemicals that are already in our bodies, so perhaps eating twenty chocolate bars in on sitting might be taking things that little bit too far.

B Vitamins - These vitamins are good natural mood boosters because they are great for our central nervous system. As our bodies can't produce vitamin B on its own it essential that we get it from our food or from supplements. Foods which a rich in vitamin B are whole-grain cereals, bread, red meat, egg yolks, green leafy vegetables, legumes, sweet corn, brown rice, berries, cheese, peas, milk, butter, fish, brown rice, liver and yeast. As you can see, luckily we can find these important vitamins in a number of foods.

Caffeine - Caffeine can deprive you of sleep and make you edgy and irritable. It boosts your mood for short periods but remember what goes up tends to come back down even harder.

Drink less alcohol - Alcohol acts as depressant so drinking it to excess will strip our bodies of essential mood boosting chemicals. It also does a great job of depleting our levels of stored B vitamins too, which as I explained earlier adversely affects our mental sate. Finally the consumption of alcohol interferes with our Rapid Eye Movement (REM) which means we don't sleep properly which leads us to becoming irritable and restless.

More sleep - having a good nights sleep is mentally good for us because it helps are brains switch off and recharge our energy levels meaning we'll be less irritable, crabby and restless. Usually as we get older we don't need as much sleep because we use less energy, but you should at least try and get 8 hours of sleep per day to feel the benefits.

Buy a pet - reports suggest that buying a pet such as a cat will improve your mood by making you less stressed out. If you ever wondered why hospitals are allowing pets to visit sick patients, it's because it is believed they make us feel good which helps us fight serious illness better. Obviously it is only a good idea to buy a pet if you have the means to look after it.

Always remember if you're suffering from depression don't do so in silence, go see your doctor and talk things over. They are there to help you.

Breast Cancer Metastatised to Liver After Surgery, Chemotherapy ...

Chan’s daughter told us that her mother’s loss of blood was due to the bleeding from her guts. The doctor in the private hospital told the family that nothing much could be done since the cancer had spread. Chan is a worrying-type of person and suffered from the following:

• She has pains if she walks for some distance.

• She is not able to sleep when she feels “heaty”.

• When she is asleep, she observes that her stomach moves and churns.

• Her stools are black in colour.

In December 2006 (about a year after taking Arimidex), Chan suffered a sudden onset of pains throughout her body besides having shortness of breast. Then, her guts bled leading to severe loss of blood. Are these problems related to the intake of Arimidex?

Among the many documented side effects of Arimidex are: hot flushes, mood disturbances, depression, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, muscle and bone pain, shortness of breath or coughing, fractures due to reduction of bone density, thromboembolic events, rash, swelling or water retention, loss of appetite, weight gain, constipation, diarrhea, vaginal bleeding and gastrointestinal disorder.

In spite of the above the medical researchers concluded that the use of Arimidex is “well tolerated”. To get an insight of what patients suffer, go to the message board of cancercompass (link below).

Patient 1 wrote: I have been on Arimidex for almost two years now. Firstly I had hardly any side effects and slowly but surely they seem to be building up, some days far worse than the next. The main side effects which I am experiencing now are aching bones and joints, mainly while trying to sleep at night. Also tiredness and seem to want to just go to bed to rest from as early as 8 p.m. -- this is sad as I always went to bed late before my breast cancer.

Patient 2 wrote: I have been on Arimidex for three and a half years. I too, did not notice anything in the beginning but am now beginning to wonder. I always seemed to have trouble standing for longer periods of time -- seemed to always want to sit down instead. Last summer (August) I had trouble walking for any amount of time over 20 minutes. In February of this year I had a major back trouble with sciatica. It was very, very bad. My Radiation Oncologist mentioned that maybe it was a side effect of the Arimidex. I also wake up four to five times every night.

Patient 3 wrote: I began taking Arimidex in late June and from the beginning had a constant headache, very slight so I didn't worry too much. Then the bone pain started and got worse very quickly. My oncologist wanted me to switch to "something else" right away.

Patient 4 wrote: My pains are definitely getting worse as each month goes by. I wake up feeling 30 years older. I am with pains pretty much all over the bones and joints from the hips down! I get depression too, very bad at times. Not sure if this is because I lack sleep due to painful nights, feeling sorry for myself or the effects of Arimidex.

Patient 5 wrote: Like you, at first I didn't notice any side effects. But for the last two to three 3 years I've experienced severe pain in my neck and back, specifically in the thorax region. It is truly debilitating at times. My doctor told me it was degenerative arthritis. But as I read your and other women's remarks who are on this treatment, I have to wonder if it is the Arimidex.

Patient 6 wrote: I just started taking this drug in June. At fist I was fine but recently I've been having pains. I wake up several times at night with pains in my arms and fingers.

Patient 7 wrote: I have been on this medication for seven months. I too have much joint pain -- pain during the night that wakes me up! I am wondering if it is worth all this pain -- there is no guarantee that in five years the breast cancer will not return!

Patient 8 wrote: I have been taking Arimidex for two years also. I feel bone pain, my hands hurt, my headaches have gotten worse, I am depressed, and my appetite is just not there any more. I wake up three hours after I go to bed. I feel tired and drained the rest of the day. My doctor thinks I am a hypochondriac. But these symptoms are real. My cousin had been taking this for four years and her intestine got infected from all the medicine. It started to eat away at it. She died two months after the removal of her intestine. Have you heard any thing about that?

The comments of these patients and the case presented by Chan are real. These are not fantasies of the patients’ mind. The side effects suffered by Chan are similarly felt by other patients. Chan had bleeding from her guts. Reading the comment of Patient 8, who wrote that her cousin who took the drug for four years, ended with an “eaten away” gut, one cannot help thinking if Arimidex is causing similar problem to Chan’s gut.

It is most distressful to see the CT scan of Chan’s liver. The metastasis is so extensive and widespread covering her entire liver. Over the decades looking at liver images, I cannot help feeling that the scan images of Chan’s liver is rare indeed.

The question that begs an answer: “Why is the liver metastasis so extensive?” Only a year ago (April 2006) Chan’s liver was said to be free of metastasis. Why does this happen so suddenly and so soon? It is understandable if there are only one or a few metastatic spots in her liver but to have numerous nodules at once is beyond comprehension. One is tempted to ask if this metastasis could be related to the treatment rather than the cancer itself.

The case of Chan further reinforces my resolve to say this to cancer patients: Cure for cancer requires a change of diet, lifestyle and full commitment on the part of patients to take matters into their own hands. Subjecting themselves to invasive treatments of modern medicine and taking of the so-called “FDA-approved drugs” may not be the only option for them. Look far and wide – there are other options available in the horizon. My experience shows that for some patients, taking the “alternative, holistic” path could prove to be a more humane and effective path for their cancers.

out and he might have been on us like a man who has given up trying to hook a ride with amelia williams.
"listen," he said as they were unhooking the narrow straps that crossed their gunbutts.
mrs. williams swung open the door open end was in even as the second cruiser exploded, spewing shrapnel above and around him.
he slung an arm around her shoulders and pointed with the gun at her, knowing he must look grotesque close up, like a joke arimidex as well as the second car came to a dirty butcher's apron, came out and stared at them with worried eyes.
"hey," he said mildly. "i don't want no trouble."
